A fascinating, detailed journey through the traditional healing practices of West Africa by a beloved shaman and scholar.
"Profoundly wise and fascinating . . . "--Alice Walker
"An amazing bridge over the chasm of modern isolation."--Jack Kornfield
Through The Healing Wisdom of Africa, readers can come to understand that the life of indigenous and traditional people is a paradigm for an intimate relationship with the natural world that both surrounds us and is within us. The book is the most complete study of the role ritual plays in the lives of African people--and the role it can play for seekers in the West.

Summary: Healing Wisdom of Africa
Comment: This book was recommended to me by a friend. I did not know much about African magick, so did not know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised with the clarity and depth of this book. I would readily recommend it to anyone, either for practice or general information.

Summary: Emminently readable and powerful
Comment: I thought Of Water and the Spirit was powerful, and it is. However, this book provides, along with stories, usable information and insights about ritual, why it's important, and what makes the "human and spiritual technology" that Malidoma's tribe has developed so valuable to us all today. Parts of it had me in tears of longing for such wisdom in my own life and community. Worth a read, for sure.

Summary: Beneath the surface...
Comment: A very interesting book, which can help bringing about a genuine transformation in our lives - authenticity, positive psychology, community, living in the now, the ancestral mind vs the thinking mind - all topics covered in the book. Using different words but bringing across the same message.

Summary: The Real Deal
Comment: I read this book because I'd just read his autobiographical story in "Of Water and the Spirit." I knew his outer life, now I wanted to know more of his inner life. How could I know that "The Healing Wisdom of Africa" would teach me more about MY inner life!
This man is the "real deal," when it comes to wisdom, whether it be of a spiritual, mystical, political, cultural or social kind. I wish every white person, especially in America, would read this book. Malidoma Some gets to the heart of our problems and does so without blame, with natural authority, true humility and great love: rare combinations! His words are gentle, yet unbelievably strong. His insights are brilliant and his language exquisite. He knows the value of the individual as well as the group. He respects children, how unusual! He understands how we got to the place in America of suicide being the No. 1 killer of our teens. He understands "the great White loneliness," (my words)and he knows how to connect us up again, not only to the God within, but to each other.
This book is nicely subversive, as well. Perhaps that is why it hasn't become a national best seller. We throw our Africans away, don't we? We always have. And what does a black man, of all things, have to teach us, we who are so superior in our technology and indifference? Only the way home. To ourselves, to our God, to each other.
Quotes:
"Matter is the skin of Spirit."
"To produce beauty consistently requires a healthy community."
