Rural Development and Social Science Research: Case Studies from Borneo, Including Selected Papers from The Fourth Biennial Conference of The Borneo Research Council, Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam, June 10-15, 1996. Proceedings Series Volume No. Six

This volume of Conference Proceedings emerged from a panel on Rural Development organized for the Fourth Biennial Conference of the Borneo Research Council at Universiti Brunei Darussalam on 10-15 June 1996. Eleven papers were offered in the session, and of these six are published here in revised form; these comprise of introductory remarks and papers by Wee Chong Hui; Victor King and Michael Parnwell; Jennifer Nyuk Wo Lim, Ian Douglas, and Keith Sutton; Dimbab Ngidang and Abdul Rashid Abdullah and Kazunori Oshima. Additional contributors to this volume were then secured from three other sources. First, there were those who had expressed an interest in the Conference panel but for various reasons could not attend, or were involved in other panels; these comprise the chapters by Cristina Eghenter; Arabella Duffield and Simon Strickland; J. Windle and R. A. Cramb; and Dadeline Berma. Secondly, Bernard Sellato was contacted to enquire about various papers which had been presented at the Third Biennial Conference of the Counil at Pontianak in 1994, but which remained unpublished, and which might be included in this volume. He provided names and addresses of individuals who had presented papers on themes relevant to rural development. Some of the participants who were approached were unable to deliver revised papers, but this search gave two additional welcome contributors, one by Frank Momberg, Ketut Crain and Vicki Pearson-Rounds. Finally, in correspondence with George Appell, it was decided that one of his unpublished papers would provide a fitting concluding chapter to this volume. He kindly gave permission to use the paper originally presented in November-December 1995 at a Conference entitled "The Status and Role of the Indigenous Communities of Sabah in National Development" at Kota Kinabalu organized by the Koisaan Cultural Development Institute.
