Runes comprise a powerful system of divination and a path to the subconscious forces operating in your life. In NORTHERN MYSTERIES & MAGICK you will discover how the feminine Mysteries of the North are represented in the runes, and how each of the major deities of Northern Europe still live in the collective consciousness of people of Northern European descent. Chapters on runic divination and magic introduce the use of runes in counselling and healing.

Summary: My first Rune Book
Comment: As the title states, this was the first book I picked up on runes and the Northern Tradition. For a long time it was the only one I could find in any of the stores around me. It was a fantastic introduction. She comes across as knowledgable and down to earth. My collection has grown somewhat but this is still a favorite. I highly recomend it for those looking for an introduction to esoteric rune work.

Summary: Authentic and Feminine
Comment: I started out studying runes with Blum's modernized interpretation, but quickly looked into the history of the tradition and after a few books, found this one by Freya Aswynn. This book is one of the best. She combines an extensive understanding of the cultural and mythological traditions, her own personal interpretations or understandings of each rune, and her use of the runes in counseling and guidance work. Her illustrations of the rune shapes themselves are unique and helpful in grasping the nature of the force represented by each rune. At first this book seemed a little unapproachable, mostly because it lacks a quick reference to the page number for each rune, but after getting used to it, I found myself understanding the runes much better for having studied this book. She includes the female perspective in the study, well grounded in mythology, which for me is refreshing because it balances the traditionally male-dominated re-telling of history with the often-invisible female side. Overall I would recommend this book, perhaps with her companion CD, to people who are interested in really coming to understand the power of the runes.

Summary: Probably the best of the Wiccan influenced "Asatru" books but...
Comment: I really wanted to like this book a lot more then I did. While it is probably the best of the many Wiccan influenced "Asatru" books that have been published she just carries too much of the baggage from those ideas for my tastes.

Northern Mysteries & Magick is mostly about runes, which I make no claims to be any kind of great expert in runology but she is obviously, and she admits it, heavily influenced by general occultism, Crowley, Kabbalism, Wicca and other "new age" ideas. Which I believe are not only incompatable with true Aryan Heathenry, they actually derive from forces that are in opposition to our folk. Even if you don't want to say it is an intentional conspiratorial subversion by people with "occult" or "new age" backgrounds writing books about Odinism the influence is still there.

While on one hand Aswynn does talk about keeping Northern European Heathenry authentic and Germanic, she also quotes Crowley two or three times and talks with high praise of two people of "African origin" being gifted at Runic divination. Also, and you can take this for what its worth, she claims that she fended off a would be attacker by shapeshifting into a hawk and flying after him.

She does have some interesting and feasable ideas though. She has a Pan-Germanic view of "Asatru", and seems to acknowledge a few times that it is Pan-Aryan, including Celtic, Slavic, and Greco-Roman Gods as being one and the same as the Germanic and also has some interesting observations on the Gods, the runes and the religious practices of the northern folk so its worth reading if you can get it from a library or pick up a cheap copy.

Summary: One of the worst...
Comment: Hmmm...where do I start? The author is a crackpot in every aspect of the word, so rather than waste mine as well as your time with a negative review, one CAN glean a kernel of insight into the northern mysteries as is so labeled by many...but that's it. All the other reviewers who "omfg, I absolutely love this book!" are either retarded or mainstream feel-goody soft wicca-tru pagans who obviously want something out of life not based on ANY ancient tradition. Lol...all one has to do is research the woman a bit and get a good laugh in the process.
